Re:Descaling - 2007/10/03 11:33 After visiting the Aroma Festival, I just discovered that a coffee machine must be descaled regularly to remove lime scale build up.

I personally prefer to remove the scale (dissolved mineral salts) before they enter the machine. The best way I have found to do this is with a water softener before the carbon filter. I have found that if you keep the water hardness to 40 PPM this works very well and the machine never gets any build up.

Lucky the water is pretty good in Australia so descaling is only required every 3 months. Can't imagine Londoners who would need to descale everyday!!

That depends on where you live. There are parts of Australia where the scale is a bigger problem then in London. The only real way to tell is to have the water hardness tested. This will also let you know of size and service interval of a water softener if you go down that road.

I have heard people flushing vinegar through their machine as a cleaning agent. Has anyone tried this?

The problem is getting it in and out, if you are not qualified to do so. Personally I prefer critic acid to vinegar as it cleans better. That is why I use a softener as a preventive is always better than a cure. The new Dalla Corte machine has a great feature where it will drain and refill the boiler when you push the button to do so. With continual steaming the salts build up in the boiler so being able to drain it easily is a plus in my books.
