how to choose a coffee machine - 2008/01/27 23:41 Hi All
I am new to all this. How do I choose, I think the quickest thing is what does the BAR do to the taste of the coffee? Because I don't want to spend a fortune in a coffee machine, but I want to get the most for the money, I don't need the brand effect. And hopefully i can get it in my area.

any opinion?

Cheers

Re:how to choose a coffee machine - 2008/01/31 20:51 Hi John,

The 'BAR' is the amount of pressure generated by the pump. But you can by and large disregard this as all the pumps will generate up to about 15 bar and you only need about 9 bar for proper espresso extraction. Best thing to do would be to give us an idea of your budget, what sort of drinks you'll be making (i.e. mainly milk-based drinks or not), for how many people in one session and your location.

If you want good and repeatable results you'll need to spend at least $500 on the machine, most of which will be wasted if you don't allocate at least another few hundred for a grinder. The cheapest combos of machine and grinder I know of which I'd be happy to recommend come in around the $700 mark. Anything less than this and you'll be making serious compromises on the quality and consistency of extractions.

Good luck!
