Perculator vs Espresso Machine - 2007/05/28 14:28 Having recently tried a shot made from my friends Isomac Espresso machine, the taste is much smoother and richer to that of a Perculator even using the same beans and grind to suit.

I find using a Perculator loses the body of the coffee and much rougher on the palette.

What steps can I take to make a better shot without upgrading to an Espresso Machine?

Re:Perculator vs Espresso Machine - 2007/05/31 16:11 Howdy!!

Are you sure it is a perculator? does it have a glass lid?

If it does, then the answer is NO. a perculator essentially recycles water through coarsely ground coffee beans until the water has extracted all the taste and oils and sugars from the beans.

When ground properly, this method produces a good quality coffee about the same strength as plunger coffee, it is very difficult to master and if you let it burn too long, it will over extract the coffee resulting in an acrid bitter taste.

So while you can make a great cuppa with a percolator, it will never (or would be very difficult to) be of the same strength or smoothness as an espresso machine coffee.

a stovetop espresso machine on the other hand......

Re:Perculator vs Espresso Machine - 2007/09/22 21:10 From what I understand, grinding fresh coffee a bit coarser than for plunger and avoiding running the system too long give the best results you can get, but it'll never be as good as an espresso machine as they're inclined to burn and overextract the coffee, bringing on bitterness. They were a good way to get coffee when there was no other, but they've had their day in the sun.
